How Did Bags Evolved?

Since Egyptian times, bags and purses have been a part of our lives, and to the ladies, they were an essential item in the wardrobe. From the 14th century, the Egyptian hieroglyphs have shown pouches that were carried around the waist, and bags were also attached to girdles. Such bags were meant to add to the glamour and status of the person.

In the 16th century, as more everyday materials such as leather and cloth were used, bags became more practical. In the 17th century, there were more variety and women, even men, carried small purses with more elaborated designs and shapes. Girls were taught embroidery, and hence, this period also saw many beautiful and unique stitched artwork in bags.

The 18th century is when neo-classical clothes became popular. Women started to carry their rouge, face powder, fan, scent bottle, cards and smelling salts in reticules, a type of handbags because wearing a purse would ruin the look of neo-classical clothes. Every fashion magazine ran coverage on the proper uses of such bags, and women started to carry a different bag for every occasion.

In the 19th century, the term “handbags” came in use, and referred to handheld luggage bags carried by men, which led to new bag designs for women, bags with complicated fasteners, internal compartments, locks and jewellery.  revolution in fashion came in the 1920s, with varying hemlines and lighter clothing. Bags no longer need to match the outfit, and the rage was for the lady to carry a doll dressed exactly like herself, complete with a matching bag for her doll!

In the 1940s, metal frames, zips, leather, and mirrors were in short supply due to the war, and manufacturers started to use plastic and wood for bag making. In the next 10-20 years, major designer houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes started to emerge, breaking down the old ideas and designs of bags.

How Often Will You Wear Your Old T-Shirt?

T Shirt survey How Often Will You Wear Your Old T Shirt? I will, and frequently too, and so will close to 80% of Americans in all demographic groups, who will wear an old t-shirt that was most likely acquired during a vacation, says a survey from BlueCotton and Synovate in 2009, among 1,000 US adults.

Altogether, about 80% of the survey respondents still have an old t-shirt, and those that were bought during a vacation are their favourite. It was also found that shirts given by an employer, from a concert, a favourite pro or college sports team and a charity run or walk are also very popular and favoured.

These respondents that are most likely to keep old t-shirts are mostly between the ages of 18 and 24, of whom about 7% say they have not kept an old t-shirt, while just over 70% of respondents age 65 and more still keep their old t-shirts.

Additional findings:

  • T-shirts acquired as a sports spectator were more cherished than t-shirts acquired as a sports participant.
  • Men are more likely than women to keep a t-shirt from a pro or college sports team.
  • Concert t-shirts are most popular among the young.
  • T-shirts from a church event were more popular among women than men.

History of T-Shirts

Have you ever stop to think about how t-shirts have become such a fashion statement nowadays? Seriously, it actually evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece “union suit” underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms. It got its name because when spread flat, it formed a letter ‘T’.

T-shirts were worn by miners and stevedores in the late 1800′s when they worked, and  became popular in the United States when they were issued by the U.S. Navy during the Spanish American War in 1898. Solders worn the crew-necked, short-sleeved and white cotton t-shirts under their uniforms. It later became very common for sailors, Marines and workers in agriculture to wear them as a bottom layer of clothing.

As it was easily fitted, easily cleaned and inexpensive, it soon became the shirt of choice for young boys, and it manifested into various colours and patterns, and became so ubiquitous that Charlie Brown, the popular cartoon character, was rarely seen without his signature zig-zag t-shirt.

By the 1929, the times of the Great Depression, the popularity of the t-shirt spread rapidly to Europe and the rest of the world. Lasting close to a decade, the Great Depression caused massive levels of poverty, hunger, unemployment and political unrest. Hence, the t-shirt, an inexpensive garment, was often the default choice to be worn during farm or ranch chores, as well as other times when conditions required lightweight fabrics.

After World War II in 1945, it became very common to see veterans wearing their uniform trousers with their t-shirts as casual clothing. The t-shirt became even more popular and trendy after Marlon Brando, a famous actor during that time, wore one in the movie ‘A Street Car Named Desire’. The t-shirt has finally achieved its status as a fashionable, stand-alone garment.

Today, the t-shirt has become a canvas for images and striking messages, and comes in all shades and sizes. Emblems of schools and teams, bold texts and slogans, colourful cartoon characters and every design imaginable get printed onto t-shirts, a piece of garment that the modernists use to make a fashion statement.
